The Dark Knight Rises is a 2012 superhero film directed by Christopher Nolan, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Jonathan Nolan and the story with David S. Goyer. Featuring the DC Comics character Batman, the film is the third and final installment in Nolan's Batman film trilogy, and it is the sequel to The Dark Knight (2008).

Comics: Batman is the superhero protector of Gotham City, a man dressed like a bat who fights against evil and strikes terror into the hearts of criminals everywhere. In his secret identity he is Bruce Wayne, billionaire industrialist and notorious playboy. Although he has no superhuman powers, he is one of the world's smartest men and greatest fighters. His physical prowess and technical ingenuity make him an incredibly dangerous opponent.
Batman was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, first appearing in Detective Comics #27 (1939).

Comics: Alfred Pennyworth is the trusted butler of Bruce Wayne and the Wayne Family, making him Batman's manservant. Having worked for Thomas and Martha Wayne before they were murdered, he raised young Bruce from an early age. His responsibilities include attending to Batman and making sure he can properly function, as well as looking after the Batcave and Wayne Manor. Always the perfect gentleman, Alfred is loyal and faithful, although not afraid to criticize his employer when he deserves it. His experience in the military has given him combat and medical training, and he was also a noted stage actor in his time.
Alfred was created by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson, first appearing in Batman #16 (1943).Movie: Bruce's trusted butler and confidant. Alfred has acted as a father figure to Bruce, and continues to aid Bruce on his missions as well as supplying him with useful advice. Alfred is unable to accept Bruce's desire to revive his Batman persona, even going so far as to resign from his position to impress the seriousness of Bruce's position upon him.

Comics: James Gordon is the Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department, and one of Batman's greatest allies. He is a controversial political figure in Gotham City because of his willingness to work alongside a vigilante, but he is one of the most honest cops on the force, often struggling against corruption from within. He frequently works outside the law when necessary, although he maintains a strict unbreakable moral code. He has made it clear many times that he only tolerates Batman because they follow the same code, and if he ever crossed the line Gordon would not hesitate to bring him down. Movie: Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department, and one of the city's few honest police officers. Gordon feels guilty over his role in covering up the death of Harvey Dent to the point where he is prepared to resign from his position as Commissioner over it, but refrains from doing so when he senses that Gotham is about to come under threat.

Comics: Robin is the position of Batman's sidekick and crimefighting partner, a teenage vigilante who patrols Gotham City armed with intensive martial arts abilities and a number of high-tech gadgets. There have been five as members of the Batman Family in regular continuity.
The first Robin was created by Bob Kane, Bill Finger and Jerry Robinson, first appearing in Detective Comics #38. (1940)Movie: John Blake is not a character in the comics but he shares a lot of similarities with the first Robin, Dick Grayson. Blake is a young police officer whose instincts lead him to believe that there is trouble on the horizon. Seeing something of himself in Blake, Commissioner Gordon promotes him to detective. Blake represents the idealism that Gordon and Bruce Wayne once held, but soon lost in their battle against crime in the city.

Comics: Lucius Fox is a brilliant business manager and corporate executive at Wayne Enterprises. He is a close friend and confidante to Bruce Wayne, frequently acting as his financial liaison. In addition, his actions are responsible for many of the resources that go towards developing Batman's equipment.
Lucius Fox was created by Len Wein and John Calnan, first appearing in Batman #307. (1979)Movie: Fox runs Wayne Enterprises on behalf of Bruce Wayne and serves as his armorer, providing him with high-tech equipment. His position as President of Wayne Enterprises allows him to discreetly develop cutting-edge technology and weaponry, even as Wayne Enterprises starts losing money.

Comics: Catwoman is Selina Kyle, a morally ambiguous character who has been an anti-hero, acting as an adversary, a crime fighter and also a love interest for Batman. Years of training have made her stealthy and agile as a world-class criminal, and her mastery of the martial arts makes her a formidable physical opponent. Although she began her career as a burglar, she has since then reformed and begun protecting Gotham City in her own style.
Catwoman was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, first appearing in Batman #1. (1940)Movie: Selina Kyle is a cat burglar described as "an associate" of Bane who establishes a relationship with Batman that "takes some of the somberness away from his character." Kyle is pursuing a "clean slate", a computer program rumoured to be able to erase a person's criminal history, when she crosses paths with Bruce Wayne.

Comics: Bane is a brilliant world-class fighter and tactical genius who augments his great physical strength with a steroid called venom. Raised from childhood in the Peña Duro prison on Santa Prisca, he determined that he would destroy Batman to prove himself, and succeeded by breaking the hero's back during Knightfall. Since then he has been an international crimelord, an anti-hero, a mercenary, a government agent and even a dictator. His father is the legendary martial artist King Snake. He has been a member of the Secret Six, the Suicide Squad and the Secret Society of Super-Villains.
Bane was created by Chuck Dixon, Doug Moench and Graham Nolan, first appearing in Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1. (1993)Movie: A terrorist leader intent on destroying Gotham City. He was originally a member of the League of Shadows, before being excommunicated. the character wears a mask that supplies him with an analgesic gas to relieve pain he suffers from an injury sustained "early in his story". Bane has been described as "a terrorist in both thought and action" and is "florid in his speech, [with] the physicality of a gorilla".

Comics: Talia al Ghul is the daughter of Ra's al Ghul. Her father encouraged a relationship between Talia and Batman, desiring for Batman to marry his daughter in hopes of recruiting him as his successor. Talia admires Batman in his drive, determination, and nobility, but was always torn between him and the love for her terrorist father. Unlike Catwoman, Talia is more than willing to play second-fiddle to Bruce's mission. She is the mother of Batman's son Damian.
Created by Dennis O'Neil and Bob Brown, First appearance Detective Comics #411 (May 1971)Movie: Known as Miranda Tate throughout most of the Dark Knight Rises movie, a twist in the end reveals that she is Talia Al Ghul, daughter of Ra's Al Ghul. Talia/Miranda was a member of the Wayne Enterprises executive board who encourages a still-grieving Bruce Wayne to rejoin with society and continue his father's philanthropic works.

Comics: Ra's al Ghul, literally translated from the arabic as Head of the Demon, is an international immortal eco-terrorist and an enemy of Batman. Believing that humanity is a blight on the planet, his extremist environmentalism has led him to seek the destruction of modern society. Born centuries ago, he has stayed alive over through usage of restorative Lazarus Pits. These years of experience have made him an incredible tactical expert and physical opponent, allowing him to establish the League of Assassins. His daughter Talia al Ghul has been romantically involved with Batman, leading to a child between the two named Damian al Ghul.
Ra's al Ghul was created by Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams, first appearing in Batman #232. (1971)Movie: While Bruce was recovering in the Pit,after his back was broke by Bane, he hallucinated his old mentor and foe Ra's al Ghul as he tried to make sense of what he had been told and what brought him to this point in his life. Ra's expressed his disappointment that Bruce doubted that Ra's would return, and he claimed to be immortal through another method–one that produced an heir.

Comics: Scarecrow is a brilliant psychologist turned super-villain who fights Batman in Gotham City, specializing in techniques and chemicals that manipulate fear. Jonathan Crane was originally a well-respected professor, although he lost credibility when he obsessively took his experiments too far and descended into madness. He spends most of his time in Arkham Asylum.
Scarecrow was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, first appearing in World's Finest #3. (1941)Movie: When Bane frees the prisoners from Blackgate Penitentiary, Scarecrow is one of the thousands of prisoners freed. Once liberated, Scarecrow presides over a "kangaroo court" trial wherein the rich aristocracy of Gotham are persecuted and given a choice between death and exile.

Gadgets & Vehicles
Comics: The Batcycle is a street vehicle that is used by Batman on numerous occasions. The Batcycle is used by Batman in such cases when his Batmobile will not be suitable for a mission.Movie: It is known as the "Batpod" in this version. It was mostly used by Catwoman's character throughout this film.

Comics: The Batmobile is Batman's automobile. It has gone through many incarnations; often it is depicted with rocket engines, mounted weapons, bullet-proof armor and other advanced technologies.Movie: It is known as the "Tumbler" in this version. Bane's terrorist were able to get their hands on several Tumblers.
