Giovanni "John" Zatara was a great magician and crime-fighter of the Golden Age, and a member of the All-Star Squadron. He is the father of Justice League member Zatanna Zatara. His successor is Zachary Zatara, a teenage mystic and member of the Teen Titans and Coven of Three. Zatara was created by Fred Guardineer, first appearing in Action Comics #1. (1938) Zachary Zatara was created by Geoff Johns and Tony S. Daniel, first appearing in Teen Titans (Volume 3) #34. (2006)

Powers

Sorcery: Zatara speaks his spells backward as a aid to concentrate. For example, saying "tegrof" would cause the target of the spell to forget something. The limits of Zatara's powers are unknown, and are far from concrete.

Abilities

Prestidigitation: Zatara is skilled in stage magic, performing simple illusions.
Hand-to-Hand Combat (Basic): John Zatara is an accomplished hand-to-hand combatant.
Strength level

John Zatara possessed the strength level of a man his age, size and weight who engaged in minimal regular exercise.

Weaknesses

The only known limit to Zatara's magic is the time it takes for him to say the spell, including figuring out how to pronounce a phrase in "back-speech".
